THE GAP

AU PAIR

I didn't buy him a present, not cause I'm mean, it just never occurred to me, that that was something I was meant to do, and anyway he got heaps of fucking presents, from all his little friends, they gave him all these expensive presents like huge train sets, and rocking horses with real horse hair, and complete sets of Roald Dahl books, and then later that night the host mother took me aside and said that Oscar had been very hurt and upset that I hadn't bought him a birthday present...

The Gap is three plays - Au Pair by Melissa Reeves, What goes down in Vegas by Patricia Cornelius, and Welcome to Bulgaria by Angela Betzien. It was commissioned by Wollongong University and performed by the students. It explores three versions of what might go on in a gap year.  Au Pair explores the strange wretched existence of young women working as Au Pairs in Denmark.
